LAKE  GENEVA

C G N    Summer Timetable
Advance Information   -   Spring/Summer 2003

The CGN have 'laid-up'

MPV Helvétie

for at least the 2002 and 2003 seasons
as an economy measure,   pending finance for a new engine

The CGN has also announced that work on

PS Rhône
would be given preference, with a major engine overhaul taking place
during the winter of 2002-03
following its early withdrawal from service on Sunday 18th August 2002
after breaking down at Geneva

At this stage it is not clear just how long this work will last
but the paddle steamer is now planned to return to service
for the 2003 Summer season
(in time for the Mothers Day paddle steamer naval parade
on Sunday 11th May 2003
to mark 130 years of the CGN)

The 2003 operational paddle steamer fleet at the start of the season
is therefore likely to remain at seven - adequate to meet the advertised Peak-Summer 2002 requirement of five daily rosters
also some special excursions and private charter sailings

PS Savoie
is NOW expected to be withdrawn from service
sometime during 2003 for a major re-build

and it is understood she should reappear after about a year
looking something like the recently totally renovated PS Montreux
and then normally be based all-year at Geneva

The first edition of the Summer 2003 printed Timetable has now been published
The are only minor timing alteration to the 2002 peak-Summer timings
but note specially that sailing 214 - expected to be operated by PS Rhône
(from Sunday 29th June to Sunday 31st August
)

is now shown to start from Geneva Jardin Anglais at 1835
calling at Pâquis 1840, then Eaux-Vives 1845
(ie - omitting the pick-up call at Mont Blanc)

Also sailings 99 and 205 (1645 and 2025 from Yvoire)
will terminate at Geneva Jardin-Anglais at 1820 and 2210 respectively

It was hoped that the 'two-day' roster sailings* would revert to
paddle steamer and/or motor paddle vessel operation on a daily basis,
rather than 2002 situation where they were operated for most of the time
on alternate days by the much smaller mv Henry-Dunant
(which is hardly suitable for passengers making the full-day cruise)
However, the same arrangement now looks like being repeated throughout 2003, despite none of these sailings* being advertised in the first edition of
the printed timetable to be operated by a paddle steamer

* Day "A" - 0930 Lausanne to St-Gingolph and 1150 St-Gingolph to Geneva
   Day "B" - 1015 Geneva to St-Gingolph and 1700 St-Gingolph to Lausanne

Confirmation is still awaited about the Friday Evening 'Dance Cruises'
which were introduced in 2002 by MPV Italie twice "Round the Upper Lake"
as an 'extension' of the Rhône Express sailing 172

There is no reference to them in the timetable, although they may still be advertised specially nearer the time

One very welcome surprise is the 1415 anti-clockwise sailings 95-173
from Lausanne "Round the Upper Lake"
which is shown to be a "Bateaux Belle-Epoque" all Summer
BUT BEWARE ! - this appears to be for simplification of the timetable
and as last year, mv Général-Guisan is normally expected to operate
these sailings except during July and August
when it is understood PS Montreux will again be rostered

+++++++++++++

Spring 2003  (also similar in Autumn)
Some standardisation of the sailings during these periods has been agreed
with the Cantons and will apply daily from
"30th March to 17th May" and "23rd September to 2nd November"

Sailings at the Geneva end of the lake improve with the
1100 sailing 43 from Lausanne to Geneva and the 1430 return sailing 172
operating daily along the Swiss Coast
at the expense of weekend French Coast sailings via Thonon-les-Bains
The two existing afternoon sailings from Geneva (depart 1430 and 1500)
to Yvoire are combined into one leaving at 1430 and making all the calls of both sailings (including the small pier at Hermance on the French border)
The first edition of the timetable shows the return sailing from Yvoire at 1645
(giving a short time ashore at this medieval French town)
Ironically the second Geneva-based vessel is now be required to enter
service for just the 90 minute 'lunch cruise'
[Most of these sailings are now expected to worked by a motor vessel
but a motor paddle vessel may appear at weekends
and on Swiss Public Holidays]

However sailings at the Montreux end of the lake suffer some economies
with the lunch time ferry-sailing to St-Gingolph cut back to Le Bouveret
also the return weekend 1805 sailing from Lausanne to St-Gingolph is withdrawn
Afternoon return sailings 155 and 173 (1500 and 1547 on various dates)
from St-Gingolph to Lausanne are standardised daily at 1535
(similar to the ultimate Winter 2002-03 timetable)
Sailings 30-91-80-191 will only operate at weekends and holidays,
but throughout the whole of the Spring and Autumn periods
Most "Upper-Lake" sailings will be operated by motor vessels
but will still call at the majority of the regular Swiss piers

It is also expected the timetabled sailings will be augmented by
the usual selection of 'special public cruises' throughout the Summer
