Advertised paddle steamer sailings which have been advised to me as "CANCELLED"
are listed below for Lake Brienz (spring / on-going coronavirus restrictions)
Lake Geneva (winter / early-spring / late-spring / post-coronavirus restrictions)
(limited mid-lake ferry sailings currently operating for essential journeys only)
Lake Konstanz (early-summer / after Coronavirus restrictions)
Lake Luzern (winter / spring / summer / after Coronavirus restrictions)
Lake Maggiore (summer)
Lake Thun (early-summer / after Coronavirus restrictions))
Lake Neuchâtel  (early-summer / on-going coronavirus restrictions)
Lake Zurich (early-summer / summer)
(limited mid-lake ferry sailings still operating for "essential journeys only")

Only 7 more days until "Tourist" sailings recommence in Switzerland
Latest "anticipated" start dates for paddle steamer sailings on Lakes..........

Neuchâtel - Saturday 4th July $   Thun - Monday 8th June
Zurich - Monday 8th June

Please note these are PROVISIONAL
(being solely based on the latest information supplied to your webmaster)
At this stage these also "assume" the service to be operated will be the full timetable
as previously advertised and that all paddle steamers will be ready for service
- which is by NO MEANS CERTAIN for some (if not all) of the Lakes
A symbol "$" will appear after any of the above lake 'links' when
any "revised" timetable is advised to your webmaster

Also see my detailed sailings summary for every paddle steamer included on this website

  BLS "now" state a TEMPORARY "reduced" service on both lakes will start on
         Saturday 6th June  BUT neither of the paddle steamers will be in service before July

         (some limited mid-lake "ferry" crossings are still being operating by motor vessels for essential journeys only)

* Remember the position can rapidly change and as well as further cancellations,
it is always possible some with "later" dates sailings could be re-instated without notice
You are strongly advised to confirm the latest position with the operator
concerned before setting out to visit any lake for a sail

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you are aware on anything not shown or incorrect,  please e-mail me so the information can be quickly updated for the benefit of the many other visitors to this website
The official website for Lake Konstanz - PS Hohentwiel
- is now showing all sailings up to 27th May as
"Fahrt ausgebucht"
which usually means the sailing is "fully booked"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In view of the Coronavirus restrictions,  it is thought this entry against each
planned April and early-May sailing is more likely to mean the sailing is
"not available"..........ie "CANCELLED"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If there is anyone in the area reading this who can confirm the latest position ?
If you can,   please email the webmaster
so this website can be brought up to date for the benefit of other visitors to the site
    In answer to a comment sent to me by one reader - yes, the Company has been formally approached for clarification,  but so far,  there has been no reply..........
.......... hence the 'request' for information from anyone "in the know" !!!
Whit Saturday/Sunday 30th/31st May 2020
PS Piemonte  (Lake Maggiore)
Were you at Stresa over the weekend ?
Do you have a photo you would like to see displayed here ?
For the first time in many years,  the paddle steamer operated 'one hour'  PUBLIC CRUISES *
from Stresa to celebrate the "74th anniversary of the Italian Republic"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She is also planned to repeat these sailings on Tuesday 2nd June
- which MAY end up being her final public sailings of 2020 !!!
It seems strange she was not also planned to sail on Whit Monday

- do you know if she had a private charter instead ?

* - this does not include any Charter sailing also "open to the public"

Monday 25th May 2020

PS Simplon  (Lake Geneva)

Click on the picture to zoom in to see the paddle steamer                                                                     photo:  Jean Vernet

The 100 year old paddle steamer sets off into the lake for her pre-season "test" sailing
She is expected to re-locate to Geneva for her 100th season

(subject to the Federal Council approval - following the Coronavirus precautions)
and she should be able to start sailing commencing Monday 8th June
Please note the CGN have stated on their website they intend to operate a modified timetable
from that date - details to follow shortly

Sunday 10th May 2020

PS Wilhelm Tell  (Lake Luzern)

                                                                                                                    photo:  Mario Gavazzi

A tranquil scene at pier No.2 in Luzern during the Coronavirus 'lockdown'
It looks like there is a "one family" protest saying......
" Use the paddle steamers - not mv Diamant ! "
In the background the former operational paddle steamer Wilhelm Tell seems to agree

Maybe the Federal Council should note they have far more "fore" and "aft" open spaces
suitable for "social distancing" than most modern motor vessels on any lake

Tuesday 12th May 2020

PS Montreux  (Lake Geneva)

                                                                                                                    photo:  Alain Vuistiner

The "paddle steamer" waits patiently - along with many other members of the CGN fleet
stuck at Ouchy harbour - for the delayed start of the "Tourist" sailings
currently expected from Monday 8th June
It must be nearing time for the cover over the top of her funnel to be removed
allowing final preparations to be made to make her ready to sail

Friday 9th May 2020

PSs Gallia and Uri  (Lake Luzern)

                                                                                                                    photo:   Adreas Hofer

The funnel of PS Gallia (left) proudly points to the summit of Mount Pilatus as she,  along
with sister PS Uri
(right),  (seen from an unusual angle at the now dredged Luzern dock)
as they eagerly await the start of their delayed summer season

hopefully early next month

MPV Vevey  (Lake Geneva)

                                                                                                                    photo:   Robert Monch

The motor paddle vessel remains on her enforced "standby" at Geneva
due to the on-going Coronavirus precautions

As things stand at the moment,   it looks as if her next movement will be a light sailing
to Le Bouveret (at the other end of the lake) to possibly re-start the Upper Lakes ailings
vice the still unavailable MPV Italie - commencing Monday 8th June at the earliest

Wednesday 29th April 2020

PS Uri  (Lake Luzern)

                                                                                                                    pictures:   Luzern webcam

A very rare sight for April 2020 !!!

The paddle steamer sets off from Luzern for the main lake on her much delayed
pre-season "test" sailing and later returning to the dock

Hopefully this means at least one paddle steamer will be ready to start public sailings
as soon as the Coronavirus restrictions are lifted

Sunday 26th April 2020

Lake Zurich

                                                                                                                    picture:   Zurich webcam

With all the ZSG fleet laid-up at the works
the small ex-ZSG motor vessel
(now preserved in working order) lies at a deserted
Bürkliplatz - Zurich's main pier

She had been planned to sail to the Obersee on Saturday 20th June along with the
two remaining paddle steamers to make "50 years of their preservation"
but the Parade is another victim of the Coronavirus precautions

Friday 24th April 2020

Lake Geneva

                                                                                                                    picture:   Nyon webcam

With all the alpine paddle steamers out of action due to the Coronavirus restrictions
the small mv Valais is one of the few vessels still in service on any lake
operating the cross-lake ferry service between Yvoire and Nyon

In the background is the even smaller Navibus mv Coppet which is being used to duplicate the busier
morning sailings from Yvoire to provide sufficient capacity to meet the "Social Distancing" requirements

The 100 year old paddle steamer is moored against the outer wall at Ouchy harbour astern
of the "laid-up" MPV Hélvetie as she awaits the end of the Coronavirus precautions
Over her "actual birthday weekend" she is planned to cover the Lausanne to the
Upper Lake sailings vice her almost identical sister PS La Suisse
before spending the peak-Summer based at Geneva

Friday 27th March 2020

MV Flüelen  (Lake Luzern)

                                                                                                                    pictures:   Luzern webcam

Not a paddle steamer in sight as the lightly loaded mv Flüelen arrives Luzern at the end
of the final sailing 904 from Beckenried

before all SGV sailings were withdrawn as part of the Coronavirus precautions

Four Paddle Steamers and some motor vessels  (Lake Geneva)

The "sad" sight of many members of the CGN fleet stuck at Ouchy harbour

How well do you know the ships - can you recognise which they are ?

the Coronavirus pandemic

With MPV Vevey undertaking a quick winter overhaul at Lausanne and MPV Italie

A correction..........

The engine controls looking immaculate     photo: Markus Graf
        Earlier,  this website incorrectly
stated "PS La Suisse" had broken
down
- this was based on information received
from a usually very reliable source

    I am happy to report that Markus
Graf (Chief steam mechanic CGN
Lausanne) has confirmed that was
NOT the case --- in fact it was just a routine mid-season service for the ship
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    With the very busy "Fête des
Vignerons" period about to start..........
.........this was a very sensible precaution to take
Tuesday and Wednesday 16th and 17th July 2019
PS Concordia  (Lake Como)
It is understood the paddle steamer had to be summoned
from the dock to cover a Como-Colico and return working
on both days vice a broken down motor vessel
Can you confirm (or advise oltherwise) which sailings
she opereted and which motor vessel had broken down ?
Any photos would be welcome to add to this website
                                                                                                 pictures:   Liomone webcam
The motor paddle vessel was observed at Limone operating sailing 52 and
later sailing 55 of the Riva based roster on what is understood to be
the first time in 2019
 (much later than usual)
She is now expecteed to continue these sailings for the remainder
of the Peak Summer period
A motor vessel was observed departing Limone on the first sailing 51 of the day
- which suggests the MPV actually commenced service from Brenzone at 0950
Can you confirm or advise otherwise ?
despite "mv Lausanne" being 'spare' at Ouchy
