Despite being converted from 'coal fired' some ten years earlier......... ...........the funnel of .MPV Helvétie is looking past its best with a coating of "slag" from the frequent bursts of black smoke caused by the heavy oil used at the time The photo can be quite accurately dated as it was after her tall funnely was shortened in 1970 and before her old rounded wooden wheelhouse was replaced with a square metal one in 1972 After being out if service for over two decades it was hoped she would be the next member of the historic fleet to be restored to 'operatioinal' status and an appeal is currently under way to help achieve this but recent damage to sister PS Simplon may cause this to drop back even furhter |
